The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an urgent monsoon alert for multiple regions of Pakistan.
From Sunday, August 4, to Wednesday, August 7, moderate to heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
This active monsoon system, fueled by moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, has the potential to cause urban flooding, flash floods, hill torrents, and landslides.
Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors during heavy downpours, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautionary steps immediately.
PMD Warning:
Widespread rain-wind/thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls are expected in upper and central Pakistan, with very heavy falls in northern areas between August 4 and 7.” – PMD Advisory Desk.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Landslide & River Overflow Threat
From August 4–7, heavy rain will hit Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.
Steep slopes in Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan increase the chance of landslides.
The Kabul River and its tributaries may swell, especially in Nowshera and Charsadda.
Tourist spots like Kalam, Malam Jabba, and Nathia Gali should be avoided during this period due to road closure risks.
Gilgit-Baltistan – Glacier & Landslide Hazards
GB districts Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Gilgit, and Chilas will see intense rainfall from August 5–7.
Heavy rain combined with glacial melt could cause Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in upper valleys.
Roads along the Karakoram Highway may be blocked by landslides. Travellers are urged to check road conditions before departure and keep extra food supplies.
Azad Jammu & Kashmir – High Landslide Risk
Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Rawalakot are expected to receive continuous heavy showers from August 4–6.
Steep terrain and soaked soil raise the danger of landslides and road collapses.
In Neelum Valley, small bridges and wooden walkways could be washed away. PMD recommends staying away from riverbanks and unstable slopes.
Islamabad – Waterlogging & Traffic Disruption
The capital will face moderate to heavy rain starting Sunday evening. Low-lying sectors like G-7, G-9, and I-10 could flood temporarily.
Heavy showers during office hours may cause severe traffic jams on Murree Road and Kashmir Highway.
Authorities are preparing to deploy water pumps in critical spots.
Sindh – Coastal Spillover Effects
Although the main monsoon system is in the north, Karachi, Thatta, and Badin may get gusty winds and light to moderate rain from spillover clouds.
Coastal fishermen are advised to monitor wind conditions before setting out.
Balochistan – Hill Torrent & Rural Flood Risk
Eastern Balochistan districts Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel, and Sherani could see moderate to heavy showers from August 5–6.
Hill torrents from surrounding mountains may flood rural areas quickly.
Residents are advised to avoid crossing seasonal streams on foot or by vehicle.
Final Safety Reminders
